1. Innovation Awards:

• The Upside: Instituting annual Innovation Awards allowed us to spotlight individuals who pushed boundaries and drove remarkable projects, reinforcing our commitment to innovation.

• The Downside: However, we observed a divergence from our goal of incentivizing teamwork, as the awards were bestowed on individuals. Furthermore, it didn’t provide a structured framework for generating the next disruptive innovation.

2. Hackathon:

• The Upside: Hackathons emerged as a powerful platform for collaboration, where diverse talents converged to ideate and execute projects aligned with our mission or business needs. Some of our most significant features, like the Duolingo English Test and avatar builder, originated from these events.

• The Downside: Despite the inclusivity of hackathons, projects often failed to align with our current priorities. Success hinged on the serendipitous combination of timing and addressing unique challenges.

3. Special Projects (DARPA):

• The Idea: Recognizing the elusive equation for impactful innovation, we introduced a novel program known as Duolingo Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA). This initiative empowers anyone within the organization to pitch and pursue innovative projects.

• The Potential: By embracing DARPA, we aim to cultivate a culture of experimentation and risk-taking, fostering an environment where unconventional ideas can flourish irrespective of hierarchy or departmental boundaries.

Moving Forward:

Our journey through these initiatives underscores the iterative nature of innovation. While each experiment yielded valuable lessons, they also paved the way for refining our approach.
